I’m a Motion Designer at Artox Media Now!
Started my new position at Artox Media, a big (staffed at hundreds people) media publishing company. Well, it’s not that big for a publishing company, but it’s big compared to my previous job.
Today marked my first day at the new company, and it already feels like the beginning of something great. Walking into a larger design department and seeing the level of talent and professionalism around me was both humbling and exciting. While I know the challenges ahead will push me, I’m genuinely looking forward to working here. This is a place where I can grow, learn from an incredible team, and contribute to some amazing projects. I’m ready to dive in, and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me!
- Some notes on my first impression are below.
From Small to Big#
After spending the previous year with a small team of mostly 5 people, I’ve recently transitioned to working for a much larger company — where the design department alone consists of more than 10 people. To say it’s been an adjustment would be an understatement, but it’s a journey I’m thrilled to embark on.
At my previous company, things were very hands-on and dynamic. We all wore multiple hats, which meant I was involved in everything from ideation to execution. While that environment taught me a lot, joining a company where hundreds of people collaborate under well-defined structures is a whole different experience. The biggest shift? The sheer size and specialization of the design team. With over 10 people in the design department alone, I now get to dive deep into my specific role while learning from a diverse group of talented professionals around me.
The Art Director#
One of the things I was most excited about when joining the company was getting the chance to work under a strong Art Director. He’s also a Chief Design Officer of the company. He has years of experience and a clear vision for the team, which is both inspiring and challenging. The level of creativity and leadership they bring has already pushed me to think differently about my design process, and I can tell I’m going to grow immensely under their mentorship.
Structured Processes#
Another major shift has been adapting to the company’s well-defined processes. Coming from a smaller setup where we often improvised as we went, this new environment is much more structured. It feels overwhelming — there are protocols for everything, from project workflows to communication. But I’ve come to appreciate how these systems make collaboration more efficient. Everyone knows their role, tasks are clearly defined, and deadlines are realistic.
It’s a learning curve for sure, but I can already see how these processes are helping me refine my approach to design. There’s a certain level of discipline that comes with working in a larger organization, and I’m learning to channel that discipline into my creativity.
The Job Offer#
Getting this job wasn’t easy. Over the past month, I went through multiple rounds of test tasks and interviews. Each task was more challenging than the last, pushing me to showcase my design skills, adaptability, and problem-solving abilities. While the process was tough, it gave me a deeper understanding of the company’s expectations and values — and a sense of accomplishment when I finally received the job offer.
The experience also made me realize that growth often comes from discomfort. The challenges of the interview process were just the beginning, but they’ve prepared me for the demands of this new role.
Looking Ahead#
I’m excited about what lies ahead, even if it’s going to be tough. This job represents a huge opportunity for me to grow both professionally and creatively. I’m now part of a team that shares my passion for design, under the guidance of a seasoned art director, and in an environment where structure and creativity go hand in hand.
It’s going to be a challenge to keep up with the pace and high standards, but I’m confident that this will lead to a rewarding journey. I’m already learning more in the last month I’ve been doing my tasks here, than I did in months at my previous job.
- No offense, Greg and Stef! I just met my ceiling here too quickly!
It’s exactly the kind of challenge I’ve been looking for — a chance to expand my horizons and grow into the designer I aspire to be.
So, here’s to the next chapter. It might be difficult, but I know it’s going to be worth it!
